March Digital Club Zine is Here!

THE LEGEND OF JAMIE ROBERTS
VANITA AND THE DEMON KING
I'm thinking that if I go back to YouTube - and that's a MIGHTY big 'if' - I'm going to keep my face off camera.

This is mostly out of an abundance of caution. I don't want my face to be identified by the algorithm, and I definitely don't want my face to be used in AI training. Would I go full VR/3D model? No. My natural speaking voice doesn't fit the anime uwu aesthetic that a lot of vtubers fit. But I have been thinking about going the route of what's called a PNG-tuber.

What that means is using illustrated representations of myself, a la Overly Sarcastic Productions, StarFishFace, and the YouTube person who did this video essay on ergodic literature. Would it be a lot of work to draw these figures? Maybe, but it's also something like animated comics. I want to see how it looks! (I actually considered doing something like this for Thoughtful Dinosaur videos, where Billy Veloci reviews books.)

There is also one outlet I teased in my hiatus announcement video - puppets.
Believe it or not, I have two puppets at my disposal, ready to be the stars of their own videos. There has also been this idea, percolating for years, about starting a side channel called "Ask Taj the Tiger." That's where Taj would answer viewer-submitted questions. Though, maybe in this day and age, maybe answering questions submitted in the YouTube comments is not a good idea. Maybe Discord or the Fantasyville Forums instead? (I still need to set those forums up.)

Of course, there's another avenue - not going back to YouTube (and by that I mean no longer posting on my channel).

I've given this some serious thought, especially since YouTube is not a fun place to be most of the time (as a viewer and as a video maker). I'm also really tired of art livestreams. I don't want to do them anymore. If I'm going to make videos, I want them to be fun, not a chore to make. (It's part of why I like making podcasts - audio editing for me is a lot of fun! It's like I'm editing a radio play or something.) But I've mentioned in past emails how I would want to do silly videos. The Godzilla and King Kong ad is more in line with the sort of videos I would want to make, if I went back to the medium.

I don't know. For now, I'm content to let these ideas linger in the air. Especially since the day job and moving prep are kicking my butt so hard right now. I don't expect any solid video ideas (if any arrive) until, like, June.
