Cryptids in Booty Shorts (And Other Things About Art)

THE LEGEND OF JAMIE ROBERTS
Panel 1: wide panel, close up on Ranki. He smiles and says, “Now then...it’s time to - “ PT Panel 2: An arrow with yellow feathers is now in Ranki’s black arm. He cries out “GAA!” and lets go of his sword. Panel 3: Wide panel, the sword lands on the ground with a THUD at Ranki’s bare feet.
So Vanita and the Demon King is on hiatus from now until April 3. Mostly because day job work is demanding more of my time, and I only have energy to do one webcomic, not two. (Also, Jamie Roberts’ backlog is in better shape to keep up its weekly updates). I also still need to prepare for Pittsburgh Indie Expo on March 15, and ain’t no way two webcomics are going to be worked on around that weekend.

It annoys me to do it, not just because it’s annoying to you, the reader. It’s also like, Vanita and the Demon King has no clear and clean chapter breaks, as it’s only 170-ish pages long. Once it’s completely done it’s going to be a pretty solid graphic novel, at least. But there’s also part of my brain that’s like, “You’re halfway through! Just make more pages and get it done faster!”

But that’s not how comics works. Anytime I rush to finish pages, stuff gets sloppy. It leads to things like forgetting to draw Daniel’s tattoos, or forgetting to draw a sword on Jamie’s belt, or coloring a character’s eyes the wrong shade of brown. Slow and steady is best when it comes to getting comics done, because it means being thorough.

(It’s also the secret to getting MORE comics done. I’ve been making comics professionally since 2013 and I now have something to the tune of 15 books and 20+ zines under my belt, not counting prints. Not to brag.)

Speaking of prints, last week I had a list of things that were doing well that I intend on making more of for this year. One thing NOT on the list is prints.

I’m keeping those as Club Rewards for the time being. If there’s a mini-print that I think would do well at conventions, I’ll print a small run of 5 of them. But I’m not going to go out of my way to draw new mini-prints or prints for the convention circuit. Prints hardly move for me at shows (or if they do, NOT in the same way that zines and comics do). But I know that y’all appreciate them, so that’s why I make them for you!

CLUB REWARDS

Speaking of Club Rewards, one thing I mentioned last week was making more Mothman stuff.

I forgot about the experiment I did with BigCartel, but I DID NOT forget that part of that involved drawing Mothman and Freshno Nightcrawler in booty shorts. So I took those out from the original T-shirt design they were made for, and made them into stickers instead!

And because I’m a member of the Cartoonist Co-op, they have partnership deals with sticker printers where I can get nice stickers printed at a discount. So guess what’s happening soon?? :3

That’s all for now...
