Right when I think things are finally calming down is, of course, when my sibling decides to ruin things. Go figure. (Some of you know already, but in case you don’t, here’s an announcement I posted on my blog.)
Let’s say there are reasons why I wrote the dynamic between Basho and Ranki the way that I did. You know, where one brother is chill yet responsible and the other upends the lives of everyone in the land.
The thing is, I didn’t write that consciously when I drafted the story years ago. It just...came out that way.
To be clear, Ranki is NOT a stand-in for either of my siblings (and thank goodness for that). For one, Ranki is a lot more calculating and takes his time to enact his plans. For another, it’s not everyday that one has a sibling responsible for causing a national war. And also one can’t banish their sibling for over 500 years. (I’m sure some of us wish we could, though.)
But there will be instances in Chapter 14 and/or 15 where the two will confront each other, and the stuff they say to each other? Yeah, I’m going to pull from actual arguments I’ve had with my siblings for the dialogue.
It’s not the first time I’ve pulled things from real life and fictionalized them for comics. See ~all of Thoughtful Dinosaur~.
But Chapters 14 and 15 of The Legend will be, I hope, the most cathartic when the time comes to draw them. Because sometimes, making comics is the best way to process hard feelings. For Basho, it helps that Norsa will be there. If anyone in his circle knows about blood relatives not always being the best, it’s her (that’s all detailed in the minicomic The Legend of Norsa).
Ok, so the quarterly zine I’m preparing to make has made me think of something. Bear with me for a second.
Because like, I love drawing all of my characters from across these comics and putting them in one scenario. See: this wallpaper I drew ages ago.
This upcoming quarterly zine is going to touch on similar themes because it’s the holidays and I love that sort of thing.
And then I thought, “Well, of course I love this sort of thing where cartoon characters all come together. Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Kingdom Hearts had an out-sized influence on me as a kid.” Which led to thinking, “...But what if I drew more ToonTown-inspired stuff?”
So, don’t be surprised if you see more crossover fanart like that in the coming weeks. That’s all I’m gonna’ say about that.
