January’s Digital Zine is Here!

THE LEGEND OF JAMIE ROBERTS
A brawny, red-haired man holds a sword in front him, wearing red and orange armor. He grins with malice. Behind him, storm clouds gather.
VANITA AND THE DEMON KING
Panel 1: Wide panel, we see the Mystic Moon shop, the sign in the window saying CLOSED. It’s night outside. Surrounding Mystic Moon, the other shops still have lights on. Panel 2: Wide panel. Inside of Mystic Moon, Claudia is counting cash at the register. Panel 3: Claudia looks up from counting, smiling. She says, “Hey, baby.” Panel 4: In comes Don, her partner, in a tank top and jeans, betraying his hairy arms, messy mop of hair, and scruffy beard. He smiles at her, and says, “Good evening, Starshine.”
So in between the day job, two other freelance bookkeeping jobs, and the work on comics, I’m doing two other things: coordinating the Cartoonist Co-op Mixtape Podcast, and organizing for a conference called Building Beloved Community Beyond the Binary.

The podcast is something I kind of fell into. Everybody else on the team has great ideas, but not a ton of time or focus to edit the audio. So I stepped in, because I actually like editing audio for podcasts. (Just don’t ask me to edit for video. It’s more complicated.) We’re still recording segments for our next episode, which should hopefully come out in the middle of February.

Building Beloved Community Beyond the Binary is trickier. It’s a conference, all about making sacred space for transgender and nonbinary people for a day where they can be seen and heard. The actual conference itself is in Syracuse, NY, but there’s an option for different Unitarian Universalist congregations to be “satellite locations.” Being one means you can livestream the panels that are available on Zoom, or you can run your own.

So I’ve been coordinating to run this conference at a “satellite location.” Part of that is getting contact information for local organizers and groups, so I can reach out and tell them about his conference.

This conference is not until April 18. But I’m the kind of personality that would rather work on projects a little bit every day, rather than putting it off to cram on a tight deadline. Especially for a conference like this one, I want it to be the best it can be.

And that’s how I’ve been tackling literally everything going on right now: a little bit every day. It helps that I now have what my therapist and I call a “Running List.” It’s a to-do list with no deadline. It’s a place to brain-dump all the things I know I have to do so it’s not jumbled up in my head. Without this thing, it would be hella more hectic around here.
